4 Red Flag Phrases – And What to Say Instead
How small tweaks in language can make a big difference to candidates
If your job ad is full of clichés, vague descriptors, or unrealistic expectations, candidates can tell. And the good ones? They’ll keep scrolling.
We see it all the time: roles that sound exciting on paper, but send red flags flying the minute someone reads “must thrive under pressure” or “we’re like a family.”
In today’s market, especially in the purpose-led association and NFP sector, language matters. Candidates aren’t just looking for a job, they’re looking for alignment with their values. So if your ad doesn’t reflect your true culture, clarity on expectations, and a sense of purpose, you’re likely missing out on the very people you’re hoping to attract.
Common Red Flags in Job Ads
Here are four common phrases we still see far too often – plus what they actually signal to candidates:
- “Must be able to work under pressure”
Translation: We don’t manage workload well. - “We’re like a family”
Translation: There are no boundaries, and we expect emotional labour. - “Fast-paced environment”
Translation: It’s chaotic, not exciting. - “We wear many hats”
Translation: We’re under-resourced and everyone’s stretched thin.
Sound familiar? The problem isn’t the intention behind these phrases – it’s that they’ve lost all meaning. Worse still, they often suggest dysfunction, even when the role is genuinely exciting.
What to Say Instead
Strong job ads are clear, honest, and specific. Try replacing tired phrases with wording that paints a real picture of the culture and support on offer:
- Instead of “work under pressure”, try:
“You’ll be trusted to manage competing priorities, with support from a collaborative team and regular check-ins.” - Instead of “fast-paced”, try:
“You’ll be working in an agile environment where things can move quickly – but processes and priorities keep us on track.” - Instead of “like a family”, try:
“We’re a close-knit team that values trust, healthy boundaries, and mutual respect.” - Instead of “wear many hats”, try:
“This is a hands-on role in a small team, where you’ll have variety and autonomy – with clear goals and support.”
Remember: Candidates Read Between the Lines
Your job ad is often the first impression someone gets of your organisation. Use it to spark curiosity, build trust, and reflect your culture.
